Empowering Journalism, Advancing Human Rights in Nigeria

HRJN champions transformative initiatives that protect journalists, strengthen media

ethics, and elevate human rights advocacy across Nigeria and beyond.

Digital Security & 
Resilience Workshops

Objective: Arm journalists, activists, and CSOs with essential digital-safety skills to counter cyber threats and state surveillance.

Highlights:

July 18–19, 2024 (Lagos): Conducted a 2‑day hybrid workshop with 70+ participants, in partnership with WACSI, Mott Foundation, Citizens Gavel, DigitUp Tech, ChatVE, and BONews. Trainers covered OSINT tools, encryption fundamentals, and zero‑day vulnerability mitigation 

OutcomesAttendees gained knowledge in strong password hygiene, multi-factor authentication, developing organisational security policies, and navigating legal challenges. 

Human Rights Reporting & 
Advocacy Workshops

ObjectiveEnhance reporting skills for documenting abuses, undertaking advocacy, and fostering strategic collaborations.

Highlights:

Dec 11, 2023 (Ikeja): One‑day workshop in partnership with the UN, marking UDHR’s 75th anniversary, to explore reporting strategies, cross-sector collaboration, and best practices for human rights storytelling 


Encryption & Privacy 
“Encryption Day”

ObjectiveBoost encryption awareness for safeguarding communications and sources.

Highlights:

October 21, 2023: Executed a one‑day encryption workshop with Internet Society Foundation and Access Now. Attendees installed encryption tools and learned about privacy threats from spyware https://mediacareerng.org

Africa International
Human Rights Film Festival

ObjectiveAmplify human rights narratives through cinema and dialogue.


Highlights:

Dec 10 - 12, 2022 (Lagos): Launched the inaugural hybrid festival showcasing international films on forced evictions, digital justice, gender rights, police brutality, and civic space, coupled with masterclasses and Q&A sessions.

2023 -2024 Editions: Expanded to include a "Press Fredom" category -- a platform for telling journalists' - right stories. The 3rd festival drew over 3, 000 submissions, 200+ screenings, and panel sessions on press fredom, climate justice, and tech censorship. LinkedIn

Digital Lab: Innovation &
Monitoring Hub

ObjectiveEstablish a tech-driven lab to pioneer secure tools, monitoring methods, and collaborative digital investigations.

Planned Offerings:

Open‑source encryption, metadata and verification tools
Custom tool development and OSINT training
Collaborative research projects and digital evidence gathering

Partnerships with universities, tech innovators, and rights NGOs. This concept builds on digital-humanities innovation models and aligns with HRJN’s ongoing training programmes.

Advocacy at RightsCon

ObjectiveLead high‑level discussions on digital repression and legal threats to journalists.

Highlights:

Feb 24–27, 2025 (Taipei): At RightsCon 2025, hosted “Cybercrime: The Criminalization of Expression Online in Sub‑Saharan Africa,” spotlighting restrictive cybercrime laws, surveillance misuse, and calls for legal reform. Speakers included CPJ‑Africa, Access Now, Jonathan Rozen, and Naro Omo‑Osagie 


Strategic Partnerships & Collaborations

ObjectiveForge alliances to strengthen advocacy in digital rights, press freedom, and gender justice.
